Bayern Munich 2-2 Mainz: Kane saves a point as Bayern extend lead at the summit
Bayern Munich stretched their advantage at the Bundesliga’s summit to nine points after a dramatic stalemate with bottom club Mainz at the Allianz Arena.
Lennart Karl gave Mainz the lead in the 29th minute, finishing calmly from close range after a swift move.
Just before the break, Kacper Potulski nodded in from William Boving’s free-kick to level the score and level the hopes of the visitors.
The visitors’ tails were up after the restart, and in the 67th minute Stefan Bell threaded a superb chipped ball into Jae-sung Lee, whose deft header found the corner with Manuel Neuer wrong-footed and stranded.
With time running out, Bayern were awarded a penalty when Potulski fouled Harry Kane in the box. Kane converted confidently to restore parity and make it nine straight Bundesliga wins for the leaders seem less certain, while marking his 18th league goal of the season and the 80th of his Bundesliga career.
Vincent Kompany’s side now prepare for a trip to Heidenheim next Sunday at 16:30 GMT.
But here’s the twist: Kane’s late penalty is a reminder that even dominant teams can rely on a single moment to reshape a match—and the broader title race. Is Bayern’s cushion truly secure, or will this near-mhen counter in Mainz spark a rethink among their rivals? Share your thoughts below.
