Marlins Waive and Outright Zach Brzykcy to Triple-A: The Marlins have removed right-handed pitcher Zach Brzykcy from their 40-man roster, assigning him outright to their Triple-A affiliate, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. This move reveals that Brzykcy was recently placed on waivers and went unclaimed by any other team. The news broke via MLB.com's Christina De Nicola before the team's official announcement.
Brzykcy, aged 26, has never taken the mound for the Marlins. He was claimed off waivers from the Washington Nationals just last month, having spent his entire career in their organization. The Nationals added him to their 40-man roster in 2023 to protect him from the Rule 5 draft, but he has primarily toiled in the minor leagues since then. His Major League experience is limited to 28 2/3 innings, during which he struggled mightily, surrendering 32 earned runs and posting a staggering 10.05 ERA.
Despite his control issues, Brzykcy has demonstrated impressive strikeout ability in the minors. However, he missed the entire 2023 season due to Tommy John surgery. In the past two seasons, he's pitched 61 1/3 innings in the minors with a 4.70 ERA, striking out 28.7% of batters but also walking 13.6%, a concerning rate.
And here's where it gets interesting: Brzykcy, having been outrighted for the first time in his career and with less than three years of service time, doesn't have the option to reject this assignment and become a free agent. He'll remain with the Marlins organization in a non-roster role, providing depth to their pitching staff.
